Rohanpreet Singh

Neha Kakkar was born on 6 June 1988 in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand. She is the younger sister of playback singer Sonu Kakkar and singer-composer Tony Kakkar. Kakkar auditioned for the second season of Indian Idol where she got eliminated early in the show. She made her Bollywood debut as a chorus singer in the film Meerabai Not Out.

In 2006, at the age of 16, Kakkar auditioned for the second season of Indian Idol where she got eliminated early in the show. Kakkar has appeared in several music videos and as a judge on several television reality shows including ‘Indian Idol’ She has been trolled in social media several times for crying on-screen. She appeared in the India Forbes Celebrity 100 in 2017 and 2019. In 2019, she was listed among the most viewed female artists on Youtube with 4. 2 billion views. She made her Bollywood debut as a chorus singer in the film Meerabai Not Out. She rose to prominence upon the release of the dance track ‘Second Hand Jawani’ from Cocktail. She then released several chart-busters which made into the same list, including ‘Dilbar’ from Satyameva Jayate and ‘Kala Chashma’ from Baar Baar Dekho. From 2017 onwards, she became more associated with the trend of remaking old to very recent songs, which resulted in several backlashes targeted for the singer, though she personally favoured the trend and opined that they have been well-appreciated. In the early days, her father used to sell samosa outside a college for a living while her mother Niti Kak Kar was a homemaker.

In 2004, she moved to Mumbai with her brother,Tony Kakkar, and moved to Delhi, in order to try her luck in singing. At that time, the family was reeling under a financial crisis. She started performing at local gatherings and religious event with her siblings which she credited for ‘boosting’ her self-confidence. She would attend four to five jagrans in a day, which became her training ground. She never felt the need to get any formal training in singing; she never felt she needed to be trained in music. After Indian Idol, she failed to gather any work in Bollywood which she believes was due to her ‘negligence’ in pleading with the music directors and producers, unlike the rest of the participants. She worked on playback singing for five years. In 2011, she released the single ‘Mile Ho Tum’ which topped the list of most-viewed Bollywood songs on YouTube. In 2012, she recorded the song ‘Aankh Maarey’ for the film ‘Simmba’. In 2013, she sang the single, ‘Nikle Currant’, which crossed over six hundred million views. In 2014, she appeared on the reality show ‘India’s Got Talent’ where she was voted one of the best singers in the country. In 2015, she won the ‘Best Female Singer’ award.
