Keira Knightley stars in the lead role of Elizabeth Bennet, while Matthew Macfadyen plays her romantic interest Mr. Darcy. Pride &prejudice earned a worldwide gross of approximately USD 121 million, which was considered a commercial success. It was marketed to a younger, mainstream audience; promotional items noted that it came from the producers of 2001’s romantic comedy Bridget Jones’s Diary before acknowledging its provenance as an Austen novel. In the film, Elizabeth is confronted by Darcy, who declares he loves her most ardently despite her inferior rank. The Bennet sisters meet the charming Lieutenant Wickham, who is connected to the Darcy family and wins Elizabeth’s sympathy by claiming Mr. Darcy denied him his rightful inheritance. Elizabeth sends Jane to London to stay with their aunt and uncle, the Gardiners, hoping to reconnect her with Bingley. Months later, Elizabeth visits the newly-married Mr. and Mrs. Collins, who reside on the estate of Lady Catherine de Bourgh. Unaware that Darcy recently separated from a woman with his nephew, Colonel Fitzwilliam mentions that Elizabeth is an ‘undesirable’ family member. She refuses, and he defends his interference with his family, leaving Elizabeth and Jane to see Darcy and his friend, Lady Catherine’s nephew, visiting Lady Catherine.

She is surprised to dine there with him and he proposes to her. The next day, Mr. Collins proposes to Elizabeth, who declines; despite her mother’s anger, her father supports her decision. Elizabeth is astonished that her friend Charlotte, fearing spinsterhood, has accepted Mr Collins’ proposal on the manor, who resides with his patron, the Lady Catherine of Bourgh’s estate. The movie was shot entirely on location in England on a 15-week schedule. It has a rating of 82% from review aggregator Metacritic, labelling it universally acclaimed. Austen scholars have opined that Wright’s work created a new hybrid genre by blending traditional traits of the heritage film with \”youth-oriented filmmaking techniques\”. It was produced by Working Title Films in association with StudioCanal, and released in the UK and the United States on 16September 2005. It was shot on a 17-week shoot schedule in England, with a budget of around $100 million. It depicts five sisters from an English family of landed gentry as they deal with issues of marriage, morality and misconceptions. Mr. Bennet and his daughters – Jane, Elizabeth, Mary, Kitty, and Lydia – live at Longbourn, their estate in rural England in the late 18th century. Mrs. Bennets are delighted when wealthy bachelor Charles Bingley moves into nearby Netherfield.
