Reese Air Force Base, located 6 mi west of the city, served the old U.S. Army Air Forces, and later the U. S. Air Force after reorganization and establishment in 1947. During World War II, airmen cadets from the Royal Air Force, routinely flew from their base at Terrell, Texas, on training flights to Lubbocks. The city is the site of the first great UFO sightings, which were witnessed by several respected science professors at Texas Technological College and were photographed by several professors at the college. The area is the largest contiguous cotton-growing region in the world and is heavily dependent on water from the Ogallala Aquifer for irrigation. The region is north of the Permian Basin and south of the Texas Panhandle, commonly called the South Plains. It is the economic, educational, and health-care hub of the multicounty region, which has a projected 2020 population of 327,424. In August 1951, a V-shaped formation of lights was seen over the city. The lights were considered credible because they were seen by severalrespected science professors, which was the same distance from London, England, as Lubbok is from Terrell. The UFO sighting received national publicity and is regarded as one.

It was incorporated on March 16, 1909, and the first railroad train arrived in the same year. It became the county seat in 1891 and was named after Thomas Saltus Lubboc, a former Texas Ranger and brother of Francis Lubboch, governor of Texas during the Civil War. It has a history of almost 12,000 years of human occupation in the region. It shows evidence of almost 11,000-year-old structures from historic-related structures from the Llano Estacado, also part of the Museum ofTexas Tech University. The landmark is an archaeological and natural-history preserve at the northern edge of the City. The City is also home to the Texas Tech Lake Landmark, which is part of a museum of the University of Texas at Lubbox. It’s the home of Texas Tech’s School of Medicine, which opened in 1969. It also has its main campuses in South Plains College and Wayland Baptist University, both affiliated with the Churches of Christ, and two branch campuses in Lubbak, Texas. The Texas Tech Medical School opened in 1996 and is now overseen by the TexasTech University System, after it was established in 1996. The university system was established by the Church of Christ in 1951.
