Gustav Elijah Åhr, known as Lil Peep, was an American rapper, singer, songwriter and model. He was a member of the emo rap collective GothBoiClique. His debut album Come Over When You’re Sober, Pt. 1 was a transition into pop punk and rap rock. He died in Tucson, Arizona, on November 15, 2017, two weeks after his 21st birthday. The documentary film about him, Everybody’s Everything, was released in 2019.

He had substance abuse issues due to his mental health conditions, including depression and bipolar disorder, which often influenced the thematic content of his music. He is credited as the leading figure of the mid–late 2010s emo Rap scene. He came to be an inspiration to outcasts and youth subcultures. His second album was a commercial and critical success, debuting at number four on the Billboard 200. His music has been described as emo, pop punk, trap, lo-fi and alternative rock, with a focus on emo and pop culture. He also had a relationship with rapper JGRXXN, who helped him develop his style of music. His mother called him ‘Peep’ because he had been called that by his mother since he was a child. His father and mother divorced when he was 14 and he moved to Long Island, New York, to pursue a career in music. In 2015, he released his first mixtape, Lil PeEP; Part One, which generated 4,000 plays in its first week. In March 2016, he performed live for the first time with the rest of Schemaposse in Arizona, following the release of the song ‘Beamer Boy’ The following month, he began to grow in popularity in underground hip-hop circles with the song from his second mixtape ‘Lil Peep; Part 1,’ which led to his first extended play, Live Forever.

He later released his debut solo album, which went on tour across the U.S. Soon after the tour, he emigrated to London, England, where he recorded his debut studio album. He left high school early to move to Los Angeles and meet up with online friends. He originally met Craig Xen online and was introduced to JGR XXN who needed a singer. In his year living in Los Angeles, he also attempted to attend Glendale Community College during his first year living there. He claimed to have Swedish citizenship on Twitter. His parents were both Harvard graduates who divorced when she was a teenager, and he was raised by a mother and a father who was also a college professor. He said he was inspired by underground acts like Seshollowaterboyz and iLoveMakonnen. He made music while residing in Long Island under the pseudonym ‘Trap Goose’ and lived temporarily with childhood friend Brennan Savage until both decided to move into Los Angeles. He eventually met Atlanta rapper and producer J GRXXN and Florida rappers Ghostemane and Craig Xen.
