He listened to the soul music of Motown, Stax, James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Al Green, Stevie Wonder, Curtis Mayfield, Gladys Knight, The Isley Brothers, and Gamble and Huff while growing up. His musical influences at the time included John Lennon, Marvin Gaye, Pharoah Sanders, Bill Withers, Bill Fela Kuti, and Bob Marley. In 1974, he moved to Los Angeles with his parents when his mother landed her role on The Jeffersons.

He attended Beverly Hills High School, where he was introduced to the Grateful Dead, Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, The Who, and The Black Sabbath. He decided that he wanted to be a musician at the age of five. He began playing the drums and soon added guitar. He also took part in the Mahler’s Third Boys Symphony at the Hollywood Boys Bowl. He has sold over 40 million albums worldwide. His uncle, Leonard M, was a private first class in the Korean War and was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. His mother came from a Christian family of African-American and Bahamian descent, with one of his great-grandfathers hailing from Kyiv. He did not grow up in a religious environment. When he was 13, he started attending church and later became a non-denominational Christian. His parents were supportive of the fact that he loved music early on, and they took him to a lot of shows. He went to see New York theater, where his mother worked, and she encouraged his dreams of pursuing music. He saw The Jacksons perform at Madison Square Garden, and he became his favorite performers. He said he was attracted to the cool girls, the ‘n’ roll lifestyle, the style of the Rolling Stones, the Creedence Clearwater Revival, and Pink Floyd.
