The concept for the film began in 2011, when Michael Dougherty was planning to make a Christmas-themed horror film, with him and Zach Shields writing the screenplay. Production on the movie began in 2014, with Dougherty directing and writing a new screenplay with Shields and Casey. Principal photography on the film started on March 12, 2015 and wrapped in May 2015, with Weta Workshop making the Creature effects. The family must band together to save one another from a monstrous fate in the film’s final scene, which is set in the middle of a snowstorm in the town of Englewood, New Jersey. The movie was released to positive reviews, with critics praising the performances of Scott, Collette and KoeChner, as well as the final twist. It has grossed more than $61 million in the United States.
