Karen Carney

Karen Julia Carney MBE is an English sports journalist and former professional footballer. She played as a winger and midfielder for Chelsea, Birmingham City and the England national team. Carney was named Player of the Year in 2016 and captained the club to 2018 league, 2017–18 FA Women’s Cup, and 2018–19 UEFA Women’s Champions League titles. She retired from the sport in July 2019.

In 2017, she was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire for services to football. She retired from the sport in July 2019. Carney has been a sports broadcaster for live football on BT Sport and Amazon Prime, including Women’s Super League and men’s Premiere League matches since 2019. She is also a sports columnist for BBC Sport, Radio 5 Live and BBC TV. Carney made her senior international debut in 2005 and became the second most capped England player, making 144 appearances, including at the 2005, 2009, 2013 and 2017 European Championships and the World Cup in 2007, 2011, 2015 and 2019. After signing with Arsenal, she experienced great success in 2006–07 winning all three domestic trophies: the FA Women’s Premier League,FA Women”s Cup, and the FA Women’s Premier League Cup.

After two seasons with Chicago Red Stars in the American Women’s Professional Soccer, Carney re-joined Birmingham City from 2011–15. Carney competed for the Great Britain team at the 2012 Summer Olympics. She was inducted into Birmingham City’s Hall of Fame in 2015. Carney joined Birmingham City L. F. C. at the age of 11 and played at various age levels for the club alongside the likes of Eniola Aluko and Laura Bassett. She made her first-team debut for Birmingham City in theFA Women’s Premier League National Division against Fulham L.F.C. at age of 14. She earned FA National Young Player of the Year honors in 2005 and 2006. Carney played for Chicago Red Stars of the WPS in the 2008 WPS International Draft. She scored the game-winning goal against Sky Blue FC on 2 August lifting Chicago to a 2–1 win on her birthday. After Chicago Red Stars folded ahead of the 2011 season, Carney re-signed for Birmingham City. During the 2012 FA WSL, she started in all 13 matches and scored 3 goals helping lift the club to a second place finish. Carney scored the winning goal in a 2-0 win against Bristol City on 28 April 2012.
