About Human Development Index in brief

Summary Human Development IndexThe Human Development Index is a statistic composite index of life expectancy, education, and per capita income indicators. It was developed by Pakistani economist Mahbub ul Haq and was further used to measure a country’s development by the United Nations Development Programme’s Human Development Report Office. A country scores a higher HDI when the lifespan is higher, the education level is higher and the gross national income GNI per capita is higher. The index does not take into account several factors, such as the net wealth per capita or the relative quality of goods in a country. This situation tends to lower the ranking for some of the most advanced countries, like the G7 members and others. Below is the list of countries or territories with very high HDI values based on data collected in 2019.

The list is expressed as a percentage of the HDI for each country or territory with a very high percentage of HDI in the top 10 countries and territories. Inequality-adjusted human development index (IHDI) is used to rank countries into four tiers of human development. The IHDI can be viewed as an index of ‘potential’ human development, and can be given by the difference between the I HDI and the IHDi. The ‘loss in potential’ in human development due to inequality is due to the fact that people are less able to do desirable things in life than they would be if there was no inequality in the world. The Human Development index (HDI) is based on the human development approach, developed by Mahbub Ul Haq, often framed in terms of whether people are able to ‘be’ and ‘do’ desirable things.
