The first story arc follows a dynastic conflict among competing claimants for succession to the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms, with other noble families fighting for independence from the throne. The second covers the exiled scion’s actions to reclaim the throne; the third chronicles the threat of the impending winter, as well as the legendary creatures and fierce peoples of the North. Others associated with House Stark include Ned’s ward Theon Greyjoy, his vassal Roose Bolton, and Roose’s son, Ramsay. Robb falls in love with the healer Talisa Maegyr, and Arya befriends the blacksmith’s apprentice Gendry, who is also Robert’s bastard, and the assassin Jaqen H’ghar. The tall warrior King Robert’s friend, Brienne of Tarth, eventually comes to serve the Starks. In Ned’s marriage with Baratheon, a loveless marriage with Cersei Lannister, she has taken her younger brother, Ser Jaime Lannister, as her lover. The Wildlings living north of the Wall include the young Gilly, and the warriors Tormund Giantsbane and Ygritte. Others involved with the Wildlings include Lord Tywin Lannister and his mistress Shae Shae. The Small Council of advisors, among others, includes the Master Crafty Master of Coin, Master Joffrey and Master Jeyne Tommen. The King’s Small Council is guarded by the scar-faced warrior Sandor Clegane and his brother, the dwarf Tyrion Lannister.
