Reich led the University of Maryland Terrapins to the biggest comeback in college and NFL history in 1984. He was drafted by the Bills in the third round of the 1985 NFL draft. Reich and Bills starting quarterback Jim Kelly formed one of the longest-tenured backup-and-starter tandems, playing together for nine seasons from 1986 to 1994. For a time Reich had the distinction of having led his team to a 32-point comeback in the NFL, including a 41–38 overtime victory against the Houston Oilers in 1993. He threw the first touchdown pass in Bills history to former Bills player Pete Carroll in their first season in 1995. He has also coached with the Arizona Cardinals and San Diego Chargers.

Reich is one of a handful of quarterbacks who is undefeated as a starter in post-season play, as the only one with more than one start to his credit. He started as an intern with the Colts in 2006, and has also worked as an assistant coach with the Cardinals and Chargers since. He won a Super Bowl championship with the Eagles in 2013 as offensive coordinator, and was named Offensive Coordinator of the Year by the NFL in 2014. The Eagles won Super Bowl LV over the Patriots on February 4, 2014. He helped the Eagles to their first Super Bowl win since Super Bowl XXXIII in February 1994. He led the team to their last Super Bowl victory in February 1998. He previously played in two Super Bowls with the Panthers and Jets, winning one in 1995 and losing one in 1998.
