The film stars Michael Caine, Julie Walters, Michael Williams and Maureen Lipman. Caine and Walters both won BAFTA and Golden Globe awards for best actor and actress. The British Film Institute ranked Educating Rita the 84th greatest British film of the 20th century. It is set in an unnamed English university and port city – by implication, Liverpool. However, it was shot entirely in and around Dublin, which was given an English appearance. In several street scenes, for example, British red telephone boxes appear.

It won multiple major awards forbest actor and best actress and was nominated for three Academy Awards. It was also nominated for four BAFTAs and three Golden Globes, including best supporting actor for Caine for his role in The Godfather, and best supporting actress for Walters for her performance as Rita. It has been described as one of the most influential films of the 1980s and 1990s, along with The Graduate and The Graduate. It also won a BAFTA for best screenplay for the film, and a Golden Globe for best director for the screenplay for The Lord of the Rings: Through the Looking-out for the Greats, which also starred Caine.
