Ewan McGregor plays the lead role as Danny Torrance, a man with psychic abilities who struggles with childhood trauma. Rebecca Ferguson, Kyliegh Curran, and Cliff Curtis have supporting roles. The film received mixed reviews, with praise for its performances and atmosphere, but with some criticism for its lengthy runtime. Grossing just USD 72 million worldwide, its performance at the box office was considered to be disappointing, compared to the other King adaptations released in 2019, It Chapter Two and Pet Sematary. However, the film enjoyed a resurgence of interest and popularity when it premiered on streaming services in 2020. It also serves as a direct sequel to the 1980 film adaptation of The Shining, directed by Stanley Kubrick, which is set several decades after the events of the original and combines elements of the 1977 novel as well. In the film, Dan Torrance must protect a young girl with similar powers from a cult known as the True Knot, whose members prey on children to extend their own lives. In 2011, Danny has become an alcoholic to suppress his shining. He moves to a small New Hampshire town and befriends Billy Freeman, who gets him an apartment. Dan becomes a hospice orderly and uses his shining to comfort dying patients, who nickname him \”Doctor Sleep\”.

He also begins receiving telepathic communications from Abra Stone. In 2019, the True knot are starving as steam has become increasingly rare. They abduct a boy in Iowa, and torture him to death for his steam. Abra visits Dan and tells him she can track the cult if she touches Bradley’s baseball glove. Dan refuses to help, telling her to suppress her shining to stay safe. They recruit Abra to guard him guard Abra’s body as they exhume Bradley’s body and have the last one psychically compels Billy into suicide. As a last resort, Dan brings Abra into his vehicle, believing it will be equally dangerous for both of them. While Abra is killed, Dan is able to shine into Abra and make Crow Daddy, the last Crow Crow. While Crow Crow is killed by Rose the Hat, who kills Dave in the process, he kills Dave’s partner, who is also killed by the cult’s last remaining member, and makes Crow Daddy the Crow. He then takes Abra with him to the Overlook, believing that the hotel’s ghosts feed on Danny’s psychic ability, his ‘shining’. The Overlook hotel has been abandoned, and the starving ghosts are pursuing Danny. The hotel’s ghost, Dick Hallorann, teaches him to lock them in imaginary ‘boxes’ in his mind. He also teaches Dan to lock his shining in a ‘box’ to keep him safe from the ghosts. The movie was theatrically released worldwide from October 31, 2019, and in the United States on November 8, 2019.
