In 2012, he was awarded India’s third-highest civilian honour Padma Bhushan by the Government of India. His most successful pairing was with Hema, who went on to become his wife. In the mid-seventies he was voted among the top 10 most handsome men in the world. In 1997, he received the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to Hindi cinema. In 2005, the judges of the 50th annual Filmfare Awards awarded Dharmendra the special distinction of Best Star of the Year. He has been named one of the top 25 Bollywood stars of all time by Indiatimes as one of their top 25 film stars of the past 25 years.

His son is actor-director-producer Ravi Agrawal and his daughter-in-law is actress-turned-politician Shraddha Khatri. His grandson is actor Rajat Deol and his great-grandson is actor Arjun Deol. His great-great-granddaughter is actress Neeti Deol, who has appeared in several films with Amitabh Bachchan. His grand-nephew is actor Sanjay Dutt, who starred in the film Sholay with Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Harshvardhan Jhaggar. He also has a son, Ravi Kaur, who is a film director and producer. His grandchildren are actor-filmmaker-director Ravi Vatawar and actor Ravi Shashidhar Jhuggar. His nephew is actor Ashutosh Jhalgar and his niece is actress Raveena Kaur.
