Swanson won nine fights before entering the WEC in 2007. On October 28, 2011, WEC merged with the UFC. Swanson transferred to the UFC as part of the merger.

Swanson has been awarded Fight of the Night honors ten times during his WEC tenure. Swanson was born and raised mostly in Palm Springs, California, on November 2, 1983. His widely used nickname Cub originates from his early childhood, as his brother could not say Swanson’s real name and opted to call him Cub. He has two older brothers Steve and Aaron, and two sisters of which one has Down syndrome. Swanson’s father died of melanoma three months after he was born. Because of his mother’s heavy grieving and subsequent drug addiction, Swanson and his siblings were then adopted and raised by their father’s cousin. Swanson then attended Cathedral City High School, along with future boxer Timothy Bradley. At the time, Swanson associated himself with local gangs and participated in many streets fights. He also drank alcohol and took recreational drugs. Swanson started working for United Cerebral Palsy, where he helped children with social disabilities. Swanson won nine fights before entering the WEC in 2007. On July 25, 2004, Swanson made his first professional fight. On October 28, 2011, WEC merged with the UFC. Swanson transferred to the UFC as part of the merger. He was expected to face Erik Koch on the UFC 52: Koch vs. Erik Koch, but he was replaced by Chad Mendes, who came from a wrestling background.

On August 18, 2010, Swanson faced Chad. Mendes on WEC 50: Mendes vs. Swanson, which was an exciting back-and-forth affair that earned both fighters Fight of The Night honors. On November 11, Swanson fought Mackens Semerzier at WEC 52. He won the fight via split decision. Swanson defeated John Franchi via submission on November 18 at W EC 44. The fight earned Swanson his second Fight of. the Night honor. In his next bout against Franchi, Swanson broke both of his hands. Swanson withdrew from the fight WEC Chan Chan Jung would be replaced by Leonard Garcia. Swanson lost the fight by TKO via a double flying knee in the first round. Swanson fought with José Aldo at Wec 41 on June 7. Just 8 seconds into the firstround, Swanson lost by T KO via adouble flying knee. Swanson continued to compete in professional MMA fights. This included a rematch with Gugerty in 2006. Swanson also competed in KOTC and BIB. On March 24, 2007, Swanson submitted Tommy Lee by guillotine choke. This was Swanson’s first official WEC award. Swanson earned a disclosed pay of USD 6000. He next defeated Micah Miller at WEG 28 via unanimous decision. On April 5, 2009, Swanson defeated Diego Nunes on April 4, 2009. Swanson beat Diego Nunes by unanimous decision in WEC 40. Swanson next defeated Mac Miller on April 6, 2009,. Swanson won his second WEC fight by a unanimous decision on April 8, 2010.
