Chiranjeevi

Chiranjeevi is an Indian film actor and former politician. He served as the Minister of State with independent charge for the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India from 27 October 2012 to 15 May 2014. Prior to politics, he had worked primarily in Telugu cinema in addition to Tamil, Kannada, and Hindi films. In 2006, he was honored with the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian award.

In a film career spanning thirty-nine years, he won 3 state Nandi Awards, and a Raghupathi Venkaiah Award, and 8 Filmfare Awards South. In 2006, he was honored with the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian award, for his contributions to Indian cinema. In 2013, IBN LIVE named him as one of \”the men who changed the face of the Indian Cinema\”. He married Surekha, the daughter of Telugu comic actor Allu Ramalinga Ramiah, and they have two daughters, Sushmita and Srija. His younger brother, Nagendra Baban Baban, is a film producer and actor. Since his family worshipped Anjaneya, a Hindu deity, his mother advised him to take the name Chiranjivi, meaning ‘Immortal’, meaning ‘greater than Bachchan’ He is uncle to the actors Allu Arjun, Sirish Sirish Varish, and Pawan Kalyan, and brother-in-law to Allu Allu Aravind, a film-producer, and actor-politician.

He has a son, Chara Raman, who is also an actor inTelugu cinema. He made his acting debut in 1978 with Punadhirallu. In 1987, he starred in Swayamkrushi which was dubbed into Russian and was screened at the Moscow International Film Festival. His 1992 film Gharana Mogudu, directed by K. Raghavendra Rao, is the first Telugu film to gross over ₹ 10 crore at the box office. In 2002, he received the Samman Award for the Highest Income Tax Payer for the 1999–2000 assessment year by the Minister for State for Finance. He moved to Chennai and joined the Madras Film Institute in 1976 to pursue a career in acting. He was an NCC cadet and had participated in the Republic Day Parade in New Delhi in the early ’70s. He did his schooling in Nidadavolu, Gurajala, Bapatla, Ponnuru, Mangalagiri and Mogalthur, and did his Intermediate at C. S. R. Sarma College in Ongole. He is a graduate of Sri Y N College at Narsapur, Andhra University, and has a degree in commerce from Sri Y Sarma University. He lives in Chennai with his wife and two children, a son and a daughter. He also has a younger brother who founded a regional political party, Jana Sena Sena, a regional party.
