Chelsea Football Club are an English professional football club based in Fulham, London. Founded in 1905, the club competes in the Premier League, the top division of English football. Chelsea won their first major honour, the League Championship, in 1955. The club won the FA Cup for the first time in 1970 and the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup in 1971. Chelsea are one of five clubs to have won all three of UEFA’s main club competitions.

Since 2003, Chelsea have been owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich. They are the eighth highest-earning football club in the world, with earnings of over €428 million in the 2017–18 season. Chelsea’s home kit colours are royal blue shirts and shorts with white socks, and the club’s crest features a ceremonial lion rampant regardant holding a staff. Based on attendance figures, the Club has the sixth-largest fanbase in England. Chelsea have won over thirty competitive honours, including six league titles and six European trophies. The past two decades have been the most successful in Chelsea’s history: they won five of its six league title and the European Champions League during this period. They have the highest average attendance in English football in ten separate seasons including 1907–08, 1909–10, 1911–12, 1912–13, 1913–14 and 1919–20. They were FA Cup semi-finalists in 1920 and 1932 and remained in the First Division throughout the 1930s, but success eluded the club during the inter-war years.

They reached the 1915 FA Cup Final, where they lost to Sheffield United at Old Trafford. Chelsea were elected to the Football League in their second season, and won promotion to the First Divisions in their first season. The following year, Chelsea took their first European honour, a replayed win over Real Madrid in Athens, with another replayed triumph, this time over Real in Athens. They won the League Cup in 1970, beating Leeds United 2–1 in a replay in the 1970 FA Cup final. The team were relegated in the late 1970s through a series of hooligan problems caused by a notorious hooligans. The ’80s were a turbulent period for the club, with star players being sold and the team relegated to the League League and League Cup. In the late 1990s, Chelsea were on course for a treble of League League, League Cup and League League League but faltering late on in the season. Under Dave Sexton’s successor, Chelsea won the English League League Cup, winning the FA League League Championship and FA Cup runners-up. The side were also FA Cup runner-up in the early 1990s and were League Cup winners in the mid-1990s. The current manager, Jose Mourinho, has been in charge of the club since July 2013. Chelsea play their home games at Stamford Bridge. The first home game of the season is against Newcastle United on Saturday, September 14. The home leg of the Capital One Cup final is on Sunday, September 17.
