The Bride of Frankenstein is a 1935 American science fiction horror film. It is the first sequel to Universal Pictures’ 1931 film Frankenstein. The sequel features Elsa Lanchester in the dual role of Mary Shelley and the titular character at the end of the film. Colin Clive reprises his role as Henry Frankenstein, and Ernest Thesiger plays the role of Doctor Septimus Pretorius. The film is now considered to be a cult classic by many fans and critics.

The movie starts as an immediate sequel to the events that concluded the earlier film, and is rooted in a subplot of the original Mary Shelley novel, Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus. In the film, a chastened Henry Frankenstein abandons his plans to create life, only to be tempted and finally coerced by his old mentor Dr. Pretorius, along with threats from the Monster, into constructing a mate for the Monster. In 1998, it was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry, having been deemed ‘culturally, historically or aesthetically significant’ The film was released to critical and popular acclaim, although it encountered difficulties with some state and national censorship boards. Since its release the film’s reputation has grown, and it is now frequently considered one of the greatest sequels ever made. It has been hailed as Whale’s masterpiece, and has been called a’must-see’ film by many critics and fans of the genre. The film is now considered to be a cult classic by many fans and critics, with many considering it to be an improvement on the original Frankenstein.

It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture in the category of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror, but lost out to The Godfather (1940) and The Lord of the Rings (1941) The film has been released on Blu-Ray, DVD, and Blu-ray in the U.S. and in the UK, but not in Europe. The U.K. has not yet released the film on blu-ray or DVD, but it has been shown at the London Science Fiction Film Festival and at the New York Film Festival in London and the Edinburgh International Film Festival. It will be released on DVD on November 14, 2015. The release date for the UK version of the movie has yet to be announced, but the UK release date is expected to be in the near future. The UK version will be in cinemas on November 25, 2015, and the UK premiere will be on November 28, 2015 in London, London, and Paris, France, and in Australia on November 29, 2016. The US release date will be the 28th, September 28, 2016, in the cinemas of London, Paris, and New York, and on September 30, 2016 in the Netherlands, and September 29, 2017 in the Czech Republic, Austria, Belgium, and Switzerland. The original film was directed by James Whale and stars Boris Karloff as the Monster and Colin Clive as Henry. The second film was produced by Universal Pictures and released in January 1935, with creative personnel from the original returning in front and behind the camera.
