About Action role-playing in brief

Summary Action role-playingAction role-playing is a subgenre of video games that combines core elements from both the action game and role playing genre. The games emphasize real-time combat where the player has direct control over the characters as opposed to turn or menu-based combat while still having a focus on character’s Stats in order to determine relative strength and abilities. These games often use action game combat systems similar to hack and slash or shooter games. Action RPGs were popularized in Japan by The Tower of Druaga, which was released for arcades in June 1984, and was intended as a fantasy version of Pac-Man. Its success in Japan inspired the development of Dragon Slayer and Hydlide, which served as the template for many future action RPGs. The Legend of Zelda, which required the player to bump enemies into order to attack them, also featured an early action RPG system. An important influence on the action RPG genre was the 1986 action-adventure game Shine of Darkness, which featured a morality system and side-scrolling during battle. The game was immensely popular in Japan, selling 2 million copies across all platforms. It was the first action RPG with an overworld. It also incorporated a side- scrolling view during exploration and an early morality system where the character’s turn causes the temples to refuse to level him up if he commits a sin. The same year, Courageous Perseus was also one of the earliest action RPGs, and featured many character stats and a large quest.

In contrast to earlier turn-based roguelikes, Dragon Slayer was a dungeon-crawl role- Playing game using real- time, action-oriented combat, combined with traditional role- playing mechanics. Dragon Slayer II: Xanadu, released in 1985, was an action role-Playing game including many character Stats and a big quest. It featured an overhead view during battle, which in turn caused the character to rise to the top of the screen during battles. The player can also control the character through the use of a special button that allows them to move around in the game in a manner similar to the way a character moves in real life. It is one of a number of games in the Dragon Slayer series that was created by Yoshio Kiya, who was also responsible for Dragon Slayer: Scenario II:  Hydlide II. The Dragon Slayer games were released in 1984 and 1985, respectively, and sold more than 2 million copies in Japan. They influenced later action RPGs such as Ys, as well as TheLegend of Zelda and Ys: The Adventure of Ys, which were released the same year. The first action RPGs to be released in the U.S. were Adventure and Gateway to Apshai, both of which were developed by T&E Soft and released in 1983. The second action RPG was Adventure and its sequel Beneath the Pyramids for the Apple II in 1984. The third action RPG, Adventure: Beside The Pyramids, was released in 1986, and included a mission system.
