Jayaprakash Narayan

Jayaprakash Narayan (11 October 1902 – 8 October 1979), popularly referred to as JP or Lok Nayak, was an Indian independence activist, theorist, socialist and political leader. He is remembered for leading the mid-1970s opposition against Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. In 1999, he was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, in recognition of his social work.

He is also known as the \”Hero of Quit India Movement\” and he is remembered for leading the mid-1970s opposition against Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. In 1999, he was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, in recognition of his social work. His biography, Jayaprakhash, was written by his nationalist friend and an eminent writer of Hindi literature, Rambriksh Benipuri. He was born in the village of Sitabdiara, Saran district, Bengal Presidency, British India. His father Harsu Dayal was a junior official in the Canal Department of the State government and was often touring the region. In October 1920, 18-year-old Narayan married Braj Kishore Prasad’s daughter Prabhavati Devi, a freedom fighter in her own right.

He left Bihar National College with just 20 days remaining for his examinations. He reached California on 8 October 1922 and was admitted to Berkeley in January 1923. He pursued his favourite subject, sociology, and received much help from Professor Edward Ross. He delved into books by Indian intellectual and Communist theoretician M N Roy. His paper on Cultural Variation, declared the best of the year, was the best sociology paper of 1917. He died in a car crash in Ranchi, Rajasthan, in October 1979, at the age of 69. His widow, Rani Devi, is still living in the same village where he grew up. She is a well-known member of the Kshatriya community in Bihar, and was married to former Bihar chief minister, Krishna Singh, until her death in 1998. She was also the mother of two sons, Ravi Narayan Sinha and Ravi Kumar Sinha, who became a prominent politician in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
