With the passing of Heather Chasen on 22 May 2020, Phillips is now the only surviving regular cast member from the latter series. Phillips made his stage debut at the age of ten in Peter Pan alongside Anna Neagle at the London Palladium. He is the only actor still alive who performed at Pinewood Studios in its first week of opening in 1936. His seductive voice is his trademark as well as his catchphrases, \”I say, Ding Dong\”, and \”He-llo\” with a suggestive intonation, which were partly, if not wholly, based on those of fellow actor Terry Thomas who was also known for playing cads.
In the 1960s, he took over from Dirk Bogarde in several of the Doctor film comedies. After marriage to Angela Scoular in 1982, he decided to move away from playing lecherous twits with lines which had been much of his previous work. He remained busy in both stage and television productions, along with roles in films such as Empire of the Sun and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. Phillips also provided the voice for the final film, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, reprising his role as Deathly Deathly. He was awarded a CBE for his services to the theatre in 1986.
