Sir Thomas John Woodward OBE, known professionally as Tom Jones, is a Welsh singer. His career began with a string of top-ten hits in the mid-1960s. Jones has sold over 100 million records, with 36 Top 40 hits in UK and 19 in US. He was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1998 and knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for services to music in 2005.

He has also occasionally dabbled in acting, first making his acting debut playing the lead role in the 1979 television film Pleasure Cove. He also appeared as himself in Tim Burton’s 1996 film Mars Attacks!. In 1970 he received a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Television Series Musical or Comedy nomination for hosting the television series This Is Tom Jones. In 2012, he played his first dramatic acting role in an episode of Playhouse Presents. Jones experienced a resurgence in notability in the 2010s due to his coaching role on the television talent show The Voice UK from 2012. He was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1998 and knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for services to music in 2005. Jones’s bluesy singing style developed out of the sound of American soul music. His early influences included blues, R&B and rock and roll singers Little Richard, Solomon Burke, Jackie Wilson, Brook Benton, Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis. He became the frontman for Tommy Scott and the Senators, a Welsh beat group, in 1963. In 1964, the group recorded several solo tracks with producer Joe Meek, who took them to various record labels.

Jones was spotted by Gordon Mills, a London-based manager who hailed from South Wales, and became the manager of The Top Hat in Cmtwillery. He married his high school girlfriend Linda Trenchard, when they were expecting a child together, both aged 16, in March 1957. The couple’s son, Mark, was born in the month following their wedding. To support his young family, Jones took a job working in a glove factory and was later employed in construction. He said: “I used to be a top C when I was young now it’s a B flat.’’ Jones’s voice has been described as a ‘full-throated, robust baritone’. He is married to his long-term girlfriend, the singer-songwriter/songwriter Toni Jones, and the couple have a son Mark, who is also a singer. They have a daughter, Mark J. Jones, who was born on November 17, 2008. The pair have a young son, Mark J. J. Jones, who has been in the music industry since the early 1990s. They live in South Wales and have two young sons, Mark and Mark J., who is in the band The Senators, who are also a member of the South Wales Symphony Orchestra. Jones is a keen golfer and has been involved in several charities, including the Royal College of Golf, the PGA and the Rotherham Trust. He and his wife, Linda, have two children, Mark Jr. and Mark S. Jones.
