state of North Dakota. The story follows a group of trappers who are attacked by an Arikara war party which is seeking to recover its Chief’s abducted daughter, Powaqa. Many of the trappers are killed during the fight, while the rest of them escape onto a boat. Guided by Glass, the survivors travel on foot to Fort Kiowa, because he believes that traveling downriver will make them vulnerable. While scouting game, Glass is attacked by a grizzly bear and left near death. After a hallucinogenic experience in the lodge, Glass survives and infiltrates their camp and sees the leader raping their horse. The next morning, he is ambushed and driven over a cliff on his horse. He escapes and kills several hunters, including French hunters and Hikucuc, who castrates him. He later encounters Pawnee refugee Hikucee, who says that “revenge is in the Creator’s hands” The men share bison meat and travel together to a lodge for meat and build a makeshift feverish feverish lodge. After the men share a sweat lodge for a few days, Glass emerges to discover that his wounds are healing and he is dying. He is found dead by a trapper and is buried alive in a makeshift grave. After they depart, Fitzgerald admits that he lied about the approachingArikara. Fitzgerald tells him that Glass died and Hawk vanished.
