Tabassum Fatima Hashmi, known as Tabu, is an Indian film actress. She has won two National Film Awards for Best Actress and six Filmfare Awards. In 2011, the Government of India awarded her the Padma Shri.

In 2011, the Government of India awarded her the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian honour of the country. Tabu’s first credited role came as a teenager in Dev Anand’s Hum Naujawan, but her first role as a lead was in the Telugu film Coolie No. 1. She is reluctant to discuss her personal life in the media. She speaks Telugu, Hindi, English, Bengali, Marathi, Tamil, Malayalam, Spanish and a little bit of French. Her first international project came in 2006 with Mira Nair’s adaptation of Jhumpa Lahiri’s novel The Namesake. In 2014, she starred alongside Salman Khan in Jai Ho and garnered critical acclaim for playing the Gertrude character in Haider, an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. She also appeared briefly in Ang Lee’s adventure film Life of Pi. She moved to Mumbai in 1983 and studied at St. Xavier’s College for 2 years. Her career took off in 1987, when she co-starred with Boney Kapoor in Roop Ki Roop Roop. She took 8 years in the making of Pehla Pyar Pyar, which turned out to be the biggest flop in Bollywood history. In 2009, she was signed as a leading lady in the Hindi film Pehlla Pyhla Pehar Pehhla, which was directed by Sanjay Kapoor’s younger brother, Bala Bapoor.

She played a police-officer in Drishyam and a murderess in Andhadhun. The latter ranks among the highest-grossing Indian films. She had an uncredited appearance in Bazaar, later in Hum NauJawan later at the age of 14; she played Dev ANand’s daughter in the film. Her last role as an actress was in Coolie 1, in which she starred with Bollywood star Venkatesh Venkatedh. In 2012, she played a prostitute in theTelugu film Pandurangadu and co- starred in the comedy Biwi No.1, and the family drama Hum Saath-Saath Hain. In 2013, she appeared in the Bollywood film Golmaal Again, and continued to receive praise for playing a police officer in the ensemble horror comedy GolMAal Again. She appeared in a role based on Lady Macbeth in Maqbool, and a role in Life Of Pi, which she also co-stars in. She won a record four Filmfare Critics Award for her starring role in Cheeni Kum, and she took on fewer film projects over the next few years. In 2015, she won the Filmfare Award for Best actress – Telugu for the romance Ninne Pelladata, and gained commercial success with Saajan Chale Sasural.
