Sugar Ray Leonard

Ray Charles Leonard is an American former professional boxer. He was part of ‘The Fabulous Four’, a group of boxers who all fought each other throughout the 1980s. In 2002, Leonard was voted by The Ring as the ninth greatest fighter of the last 80 years. He won four gold medals at the 1976 Olympic Games, his first and only appearance in the Olympics.

He won world titles in five weight divisions and the lineal championship in three weight divisions; as well as the undisputed welterweight title. Leonard was the first boxer to earn more than USD 100 million in purses, and was named ‘Boxer of the Decade’ in 1979 and 1981. Leonard won four gold medals at the 1976 Olympic Games, his first and only appearance in the Olympics. He also won the National Golden Gloves and National AAU Lightweight Championships in 1974 and 1975. He lost a disputed decision to Anatoli Kamnev in Moscow, after which he was given the winner’s trophy to Leonard. In 1976, Leonard made the U.S. Olympic Team as the light welterweights representative. He has also been a motivational speaker, and appeared in the movie “Sugar Ray” as a guest star in the 1990s. Leonard is married to his longtime girlfriend, former Olympian and Olympic gold medalist Toni-Ann Jones. He had four children with his wife, Toni, and one daughter with another Olympian, Tanya. He currently lives in Washington, D.C. and works as a boxing motivational speaker and motivational speaker.

In 1972, Leonard boxed in the featherweight quarterfinals of the NationalAAU Tournament, losing by decision to Jerome Artis. The following year, he won the national Golden Gloves Lightweight Championship, but lost to Randy Shields in the lightweight final. In 1973, Leonard won thenational Golden Gloves lightweight championship. In 1974, he again won theNational AAU Welterweight Championships. In 1975, he became the first American to win the National Welter Weight Championship at the Pan American Games. In the same year, Leonard also won his first gold medal in the PanAmerican Games at the Light Welterweights.
