Sheila Kuehl

Sheila James Kuehl is an American politician, former actress, and currently the member of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors for the 3rd District. In 1994, she became the first openly gay California legislator. As an actress, she is best known for her role in the early 1960s tv show, The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis.

In 1994, she became the first openly gay California legislator. As an actress, she is best known for her role in the early 1960s tv show, The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis. In her first six years on the Board, she has undertaken or collaborated in a number of initiatives and motions to improve the quality of life and reform systems in the County. She also helped establish oversight of the Probation Department and is working to reform the adult and juvenile justice systems, emphasizing’second chance’ and ‘anti-recidivism’ programs. She was elected to the California State Senate in 2008 and served in the Senate until 2012. She is currently serving as the Chair of the Board of Commissioners of First 5 LA and the First Vice chair of the board of directors of LA Metro. She previously served as the first woman in California history to be named Speaker pro tempore of the California state Assembly. In 1998 and 2000, the California Journal chose her as the Assembly member with the greatest intelligence and the most integrity. She has been named one of the 20 most fascinating women in politics by George magazine and by the Capitol Weekly. Her father, Arthur, was an airplane construction worker at Douglas Aircraft. He was Catholic and her mother, Lillian, was Jewish. As a child actress she performed under the stage name Sheila James.

She starred with radio and film veterans Penny Singleton, Gale Gordon, and Jim Backus on the family radio program The Penny Williamson Show airing live in Hollywood studios in the 1960s. She would later cite her interaction with the other NBC stars as influential in forming her talent and comedy skills. She later starred in the NBC drama The Cisco Kid with Doris Day and The Bob Hope Show with Bob Hope. She currently lives in Los Angeles with her husband and two daughters. She and her husband have two young children, a son, a daughter-in-law, and a son-to-be. The couple have a son and two step-daughters who are currently living in New York City and Los Angeles. They also have a daughter who is in the process of moving back to Tulsa, Oklahoma to live with her mother. She lives with her wife and two children in the San Diego suburb of San Diego and has a son who lives with his wife and three children in San Diego. She recently moved to Los Angeles to be closer to her daughter and step-son. She now lives in a luxury home with a husband and a daughter in the Santa Monica area of Los Angeles, California. Her husband and daughter live in a home that she shares with a friend. She had a daughter with a boyfriend who lives in Santa Monica and has two children of her own. The family lives in an apartment complex that she shared with her brother and sister-in law. She works as a freelance writer and has written several books and several plays.
