Founded in August 1920, the club became affiliated with the Indian Football Association in 1922 before earning promotion to the Calcutta Football League first division in 1924. East Bengal won their first league title in 1942 and have since gone on to win the title a record 39 times. They have also won eight Federation Cups, three Super Cups, a record 29 IFA Shield titles, and a record 16 Durand Cup titles. The club is mainly supported by the immigrant population from the eastern region of Bengal, who were forced to leave their homes during the partition of 1947. As a result, East Bengal has a long-standing rivalry with its cross-town competitors Mohun Bagan, with whom it competes in the KolkATA derby, Asia’s biggest football rivalry. The Club dons the iconic red and gold colours, which gives it the nickname of the Red and Gold Brigade. The team was also a founding member of the National Football League in 1996 and has won the league title three times. It was also the first Indian club to play in the Indian Super League, the top flight of Indian football, as well as the top tier state football league of West Bengal, the Calutta Premier Division A. The first match between East Bengal and Mohun. Bagan took place on 8 August 1921 in the Coochbehar Cup, which didn’t turn out in the favour of the teams as it ended in a goalless draw.

In 1924 the club won the Second Division and gained promotion to IFA First Division after finishing second place to Cameroons ‘B’ in the First Division at a time when only two Indian-based clubs were allowed to gain promotion. This led to more controversy since the IFA allowed only two clubs in the first division to be in the same league line-up in line for promotion, and East Bengal was deprived of the same promotion to First Division. In the same month of their formation,. the club participated in their maiden tournament in the Hercules Cup. The club also won Khagendra Shield in 1921. In their first match both in the tournament and in their history against Metropolitan College, which they went on- to win 4–0. East. Bengal won the semi-final match, which was an unofficial derby between the teams which didn’t turn into a semi-finals match at that time. In its first season in the league the club finished placing third in their first season. Following this, they won the second division title and gained promotion to IFA Second Division in 1922. In that year, they also won the I FA Second Division title. In 1996, they became the first club in India to win three league titles in a row.
