It was also the temporary home of Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club for two seasons during the 1990s. The stadium underwent extensive redevelopment during the late 1990s, which has brought its capacity down from nearly 20,000 to a current figure of11,582. A new attendance record was set in 1924 when an FA Cup match against First Division leaders Cardiff City drew a crowd of 19,472. The first floodlights were erected in 1963, but this was over £14,000, and this was to be the last significant development at the ground. The most extensive redevelopment to date has had a total cost of £28,500, with 5,000 seats being added to the ground to increase its capacity to 50,000. The capacity of the ground was listed as 22,000 in the early 1980s, although this was reduced to 19,000 when the Gordon Road Stand was closed for safety reasons between 1987 and 1987. It has been used for women’s and youth international football matches and a London Broncos rugby league match.
