Released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer on June 4, 1982, Poltergeist was a major critical and commercial success, becoming the eighth-highest-grossing film of 1982. Years since its release, the film has been recognized as a horror classic and has gained a cult following. It was nominated for three Academy Awards, named by the Chicago Film Critics Association as the 20th-scariest film ever made, and the scene of the clown doll attack was ranked as #80 on Bravo’s 100 Scariest Movie Moments. It was followed by Polter spirit II: The Other Side, Polterspirit III, and a 2015 remake. The remake was released on November 14, 2015. It has been released as a direct-to-video release on November 25, 2015, and a Blu-ray and DVD release on December 1, 2016, as well as on Blu-Ray and DVD on December 8, 2016. It is available on DVD in the U.S. and Blu-rays in the UK, with a DVD version of the UK version available in the US and UK on December 14, 2016 and 2017. The UK version is not available in Australia, but the UK DVD version is available in Canada and Australia.

The US DVD version has a different release date and a different Blu- ray release date, but a UK release date has not yet been announced. The U.K. release date for the UK release of the film is December 16, 2016; the US release date is December 17, 2017; and the UK Release date of December 18, 2017 is December 19, 2017. It will be released in Australia on December 20, 2018; and in Europe on December 21, 2018, and in North America on December 22, 2018. It opens in UK cinemas on December 23, 2018 and in the United States on December 28, 2019; and worldwide on December 29, 2019. The UK release dates for all three versions are the same; they are released on December 30, 2020, and December 31, 20, 20 and 20, respectively. The US release dates are the dates of the US releases of both the UK releases and the European releases of the two UK releases; they will be the same on December 27, 20th and 30th, respectively; and on March 31, 21st, and 28th, 2023. In the UK versions, the release date of the second film is the same as the American release; it will also be released on March 28, 2028.
