Plymouth Colony

Plymouth Colony was an English colonial venture in America from 1620 to 1691. It was the second successful colony to be founded by the English in the United States after Jamestown in Virginia. At its height, Plymouth Colony occupied most of the southeastern portion of Massachusetts. The colony was ultimately merged with the Massachusetts Bay Colony and other territories in 1691 to form the Province of Massachusetts Bay.

It was the second successful colony to be founded by the English in the United States after Jamestown in Virginia. At its height, Plymouth Colony occupied most of the southeastern portion of Massachusetts. Plymouth played a central role in King Philip’s War, one of several Indian Wars. The colony was ultimately merged with the Massachusetts Bay Colony and other territories in 1691 to form the Province of Massachusetts Bay. Many of the people and events surrounding Plymouth Colony have become part of American folklore, including the American tradition of Thanksgiving and the monument of Plymouth Rock. The original Mayflower was purchased in London and set out to meet Mayflower in Southampton, England, around the end of July 1620. Other passengers on the Mayflower included William Brewster, who had been in hiding for a year, and a group of people known as the Leiden congregation. The term Strangers was also used for many of the indentured servants who worked for the colony’s military leader, Christopher Martin, who was designated by the Merchant Adventurers to lead the colony to war with the Wampanoag Chief Massasoit. In 1608, the congregation left England in 1608 and emigrated to the Netherlands, settling first in Amsterdam and then in Leiden. The congregation obtained a land patent from the Plymouth Company in June 1619.

They had declined the opportunity to settle south of Cape Cod in New Netherland because of their desire to avoid the Dutch influence. This land patent allowed them to settle at the mouth of the Hudson River. The social and legal systems of the colony became closely tied to their religious beliefs, as well as to English custom. The core group were part of a congregation led by William Bradford, who came to be known asThe Pilgrims. The group was largely made up of people recruited to provide practical assistance to the colony and additional hands to work to work on the colony. They were known as ‘The Strangers’ The colony established a treaty with Wamponoag ChiefMassasoit which helped to ensure its success; in this, they were aided by Squanto, a member of the Patuxet tribe. The settlement served as the capital of Plymouth and developed as the town of Plymouth, Massachusetts. It is located at 41°50′42″N 70°44′19″W 41. 8450°N 70. 7387°W) 41.8450; -70.7387 Plymouth Rock is a popular tourist destination in the U.S. and is located in the southeastern part of Massachusetts, near the tip of the Cape Cod Peninsula. The town is also known as Plymouth Harbor, which is located on the New England coast. It has a population of about 2,000 people, about 1,500 of whom live in the Plymouth Plantation. The population of Plymouth is about 1.5 million.
