About Philip Rivers in brief

Summary Philip RiversPhilip Michael Rivers is an American football quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts of the National Football League. He played college football at North Carolina State and was selected in the first round of the 2004 NFL Draft as the fourth overall pick by the New York Giants. Rivers was a member of the Chargers franchise for 16 seasons before signing with the Colts in 2020. During his tenure with the Chargers, he was named to eight Pro Bowls while leading the team to four division titles and six postseason appearances. He is also second all-time in consecutive regular season starts by a quarterback in NFL history at 242, having started every regular season game since 2006. Rivers has worn the number 17 jersey since the ninth grade, in honor of his father, who wore the same number in high school. His father, Steve, was the head coach of Decatur, Alabama’s football team and his mother, Joan, was a teacher. Rivers’ first start in an official game came in the seventh grade, when he played in a game against Pitt in the Tangerine Bowl. The quarterback finished the game with a 34–19, passing for 189 yards and a touchdown. In 2002, Rivers led the Wolfpack to a dominating 28–6 win over Notre Dame. In the most important game of the year, Rivers delivered an MVP performance in the Gator Bowl against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. He was selected as the MVP of the game and received an invitation to play against Notre Dame in the 2013 Super Bowl.

He has been named to the Pro Football Hall of Fame four times, most recently in 2013. He also won the Super Bowl MVP award in 2010. He won the Heisman Trophy in 2011 and was named the ACC Player of the Year in 2012. Rivers is a three-time All-American and the ACC’s first-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection in 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2004. He led the NC State football team to an 8–4 record, including a win against Minnesota in the MicronPC Bowl. In his debut, a 38–31 double-overtime win over Arkansas State, he passed for 397 yards and three touchdowns. For the season, Rivers passed for 3,054 yards and 25 touchdowns. He broke a half-dozen school passing marks, was ACC Rookie of the Week a record eight times, and earned honors as the conference Freshman of theyear. He had offers from Auburn and Alabama, neither of which projected him as a starting quarterback. Rivers rejected them in order to go to a program where he would have more playing time. In 2007, he helped the team win their first playoff game since 1994 during the 2007 season, which culminated in a trip to the AFC Championship Game. His career in the postseason has been less successful, however, compiling a 5–6 record and never reaching the Superbowl. In 2008, he threw for 401 yards in a 41–38 win against Indiana, highlighted by a timely 47-yard pass to future first round pick Koren Robinson with under a minute to go.
