About Money in the Bank (2011) in brief

Summary Money in the Bank (2011)Money in the Bank was a professional wrestling pay-per-view event held by WWE for their Raw and SmackDown brand divisions. It took place on July 17, 2011, at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois. The main event saw CM Punk defeating John Cena to become the new WWE Champion. In the World Heavyweight Championship match, Christian defeated Randy Orton by disqualification and became the new champion as per the match stipulation. The event was broadcast globally and received mostly positive reviews from critics, with the main event receiving the most praise. It was also the last to occur under the first brand split, which ended in August. The concept of the show came from WWE’s established Money in theBank ladder match that was originally held at WrestleMania from 2005–2010. The match features multiple wrestlers using ladders to retrieve a briefcase hanging above the ring. The briefcase contains a contract that guarantees the winner a match for a world championship at any time within the next year. For 2011, two MITB ladder matches occurred, one each for the Raw andSmackDown brands, with Raw’s match granting a contract for their WWE Championship while Smackdown’s granted one for their World Heavy Weight Championship. The professional wrestling matches at Money inTheBank featured professional wrestlers performing as characters in scripted events pre-determined by the hosting promotion, WWE. The storylines provided the background to the 2011 event, which continued the storylines from the previous event in WWE’s 2011 pay- per-view schedule, Capitol Punishment.

It is the second event under the Money in The Bank chronology, thus establishing the show as an annual pay-Per-view. The first event was held in 2010 as a gimmick pay- Per-view and it was held on July 16, 2010, in New York City. The second installment in the series of events took place in July 2011, in Chicago, Illinois, and featured six matches, including two ladder matches and a match between Alberto Del Rio and Daniel Bryan for theRaw brand and Christian for the Smack down brand. The matches were for the WWE Championship, the WWE World Championship, and the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. The final match was between Daniel Bryan and Christian, for the World Champion and the WWE World Heavyweight championship, which was also held at the event. The winner of the match would receive a WWE Championship match at a time of his choosing within thenext year. The WWE Championship was awarded to Christian, who would then invoke his rematch clause against Orton the following week. The storyline between Christian and Orton started on May 6, when Christian had won the title less than a week after Christian had become the champion. The feud continued on the June 13, 2011 episode of Raw. On June 20, Punk defeated Cena in a non-title match and then became the number one contender by winning a triple threat Falls Count Anywhere match against Alberto Del Janeiro and Rey Mysterio. On the next episode ofRaw, Punk cost Cena a tables match against R-Truth, then delivered a worked shoot promo saying that he, rather than Cena, was “the best in the world”.
