The most present-day pronunciations among the natives, among the present natives, are Chiwerea, Sunni, and Sunni-Maya, which translates to ‘Missouri’ and ‘Maya’ The state’s name is derived from the Siouans, who lived in what is now Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska and South Dakota in the 16th and 17th centuries. The current state motto is ‘The State of Missouri’ which means ‘The Show Me State’ and is a reference to the Missouri River and the state’s history as a border state.
