In 2005, the film was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant”; it was preserved by the Academy Film Archive in 2009. It stars Maureen O’Hara, John Payne, Natalie Wood, and Edmund Gwenn, and takes place between Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day in New York City. It is one of the most popular Christmas films of all time, and has become a perennial Christmas favorite. It was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture, but lost to Gentleman’s Agreement in 1947. The movie was released simultaneously with a short novelization of the tale, which was published by Harcourt Brace simultaneously with the film’s release. The novelization was written by Valentine Davies, who also wrote a short film version of the story, and was published in 1947 as a companion to the film. The first two hours of the film are devoted to the story of Kris Kringle, who is hired to play Santa in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The second hour is devoted to a legal battle between Kris and Macy’s and the district attorney. The third hour is dedicated to the legal battle over whether or not Kris actually is Santa Claus. The fourth hour is spent on a legal argument over whether Kris is Santa or just a character in the movie, and the film ends on a cliffhanging cliffhanger. The final episode is set to air on December 25, 2013 on ABC’s “Larry King Live” at 8 p.m. ET.
