Michael Alig

Michael Alig was one of the ringleaders of the Club Kids, a group of young New York City clubgoers who became a cultural phenomenon in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Alig and his roommate, Robert D. Riggs, killed fellow Club Kid Andre \”Angel\” Melendez in a confrontation over a delinquent drug debt. In October 1997, Alig pled guilty to first-degree manslaughter and was sentenced to 10 to 20 years in prison. He was released on May 5, 2014 and is now living in Los Angeles with his wife and two children.

He leaves behind a wife and three children who he met at Fordham University, where he studied architecture and later worked as a bus boy at Danceteria, a New York nightclub. In 1988, he was hired by the owner of The Limelight, Peter Gatien, to organize parties for Gatien’s other clubs: Club USA, the Palladium, and Tunnel. In 1995, Gatien sent Alig to rehab once again. Some of Alig’s behavior could be explained by a personality disorder; he reported being diagnosed with histrionic personality disorder. In March 1996, he moved into Alig’s Westbank apartment. On the night of March 17, 1996, his roommate and his regular roommate Robert Riggs and Alig, 17, killed Melendez, a regular Club Kid, at the apartment where he was a regular promoter. Melendez was fired from his job at the club shortly after the murder. The club was closed by federal agents after an investigation found that Gatien was allowing drugs to be sold on the premises and that Alig had sold drugs to Melendez on the regular.
