About Lovecraft Country (novel) in brief
Lovecraft Country is a 2016 dark fantasy horror novel by Matt Ruff. It explores the conjunction between the horror fiction of H. P. Lovecraft and racism in the United States during the era of Jim Crow laws. It was published by HarperCollins. The book consists of eight interconnected stories: Atticus Turner, George, Montrose, Letitia, Hippolyta, Ida, Hiram Winthrop, and William Braithwhite. The major characters include: Atticus, George and Montrose. Letitia receives an inheritance from her late father, a notorious gambler, and uses it to buy, in a white neighborhood, a large 14-bedroom house called the Winthrop House. After moving in, she realizes that the house is haunted by Winthrop’s ghost who is not too happy about sharing it with new residents. She and Letitia struggle and he nearly kills her until she convinces him that if he does she will stay as a ghost and haunt him back. Ida is captured by a woman named Ida and several others who had been taken there nearly 20 years ago by Hiram, who was furious with them for taking him.
She is able to get a key to an observatory in Warlock Hill, Wisconsin. She discovers it contains no windows, just a control console containing 64 windows each displaying a 3-digit number, and a button. She soon discovers that by pushing the button, a scene is projected inside the observatory from random places in the universe in the other places which she suspects would let her walk out that door. Atticus and his uncle George are chased, accosted, and later nearly murdered by racists on the way to Ardham, Massachusetts. They find a large manor house called Ardham Lodge. The current owner of the house, Samuel Braith white, is planning a ceremony with all of the members of his lodge during which he needs a conduit for some ancient power. Presumably this will kill Atticus. He secretly instructs Atticus with an incantation to say during the ceremony and it causes the unleashed power to consume Samuel and all the members.
