It is one of the most popular Christmas films of all time, along with The Nutcracker and the Coen Brothers’ The Secret of the Nativity and The Snowman. The Christmas theme is a reference to the popular children’s book, The Christmases of Santa Claus, which was written in the 1930s by Charles M. C. Martin and published by Paddy WIlliams. The book was later adapted into a film, The Santa Claus Story, in which the main character, Santa Claus himself, is played by Tom Hiddleston, and the story is re-imagined as a Christmas film. The plot centres around a man named David, who lives in London with his wife, Karen, and their two young children. In the weeks leading up to Christmas, David is shown to be in love with several different people, all of whom are shown to have different feelings for each other. The stories are interlinked as the tales progress, with David’s love for each of them being shown through a series of flashbacks and epilogues. In one story, David tells Karen that he loves her even though he has no intention of reciprocating his feelings for her. In another, a man tells her that he would do anything for her, even if he were to lose his wife for someone else. In a third, a woman tells him that he is the only person she wants to spend Christmas with.
