Hamilton was listed in the 2020 issue of Time as one of the 100 most influential people globally. He is the first and only black driver to race in the sport, as of 2020. His father, Anthony, is Black British, while his mother, Carmen, is White British, making him mixed-race. Hamilton self-identifies as black. He was born and raised in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, 30 miles north of London. Hamilton’s father, bought him a radio-controlled car when he was five, which gave him his first taste of racing competition before finishing second in the national BRCA championship the following year. He lived with his mother and older half-sisters Samantha and Nicola until he was twelve, and then lived. with his father, stepmother Linda and half-brother Nicolas, who is also a professional racing driver and has cerebral palsy. In February 2001 he began studies at Cambridge University, where he played football for his school team Ashley Young Young. In addition to racing, he also played football with his eventual England international team, Ashley Young. Hamilton is an Arsenal fan, and said that if Formula One had not worked for him he would have been a footballer or cricketer.

He has been outspoken in his criticism of racial politics in F1 as well as advocating for greater diversity in theSport. Hamilton won his third and fourth titles in a row in 2019 and 2020, respectively, equalling Michael Schumacher’s record of seven drivers’ titles. In early 2010, Hamilton continued his racing career, including working as a double glazing salesman, putting up signs up for estate agents and putting out signs for his son’s racing career. He won consecutive titles in 2014 and 2015 during an intense rivalry with teammate Nico Rosberg to match his hero Ayrton Senna’s three World Championships. He also twice overturned mid-season points deficits to claim consecutive titles for the second time in his career in 2017 and 2018. In 2010, he won the British Grand Prix, his first grand prix title. In 2011, he became the youngest Formula One World Champion in history, aged 19. He set numerous records as he finished runner-up to Kimi Räikkönen by one point in the 2007 season. In 2012, Hamilton won the F1 World Championship for the first time, becoming the then-youngest F1 world champion in history. In 2013, Hamilton signed with Mercedes in 2013. He continued to race for Mercedes until 2014, when he won his sixth title in 2014. In 2015, Hamilton became the first black F1 driver to win six World Championship titles in one season.
