Despite being ABC’s second-highest rated sitcom for the 2016–17 season, the network declined to renew Last Man Standing for a seventh season. One year later, Fox announced it had picked up the show for a 7th season, which premiered on September 28, 2018. In May 2020, Fox renewed the series for a 9th and final season,which premiered on January 3, 2021. The character of Boyd was also age-advanced from age five to five years old in season 2. Jordan Masterson plays Ryan, Boyd’s father, in a recurring role. Nick Jonas, previously played in one episode in season 1, guest-starred in one episode in the 2nd season.
