The granddaughter of Admiral of the Fleet the 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma, who was an uncle of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh and a second cousin once removed of Queen Elizabeth II.

She was baptised by the Archbishop of Canterbury on 29 September 1957 at Mersham Parish Church. Her godparents were Prince George of Hanover, Mrs. E. Heywood-Lonsdale, and Mrs. C. H. Troughton. In 1974, while corresponding with Lady Amanda’s mother about her future with Prince Charles, the Prince had accepted the prospect of living on the estate of Chevening in Kent. If Lady Amanda were to become the Princess of Wales, this would make some familial sense, although the Prince did visit the house several times, although not to the same extent.
