The Texans were to have exclusive access to the Cotton Bowl until the NFL put an expansion team, the Dallas Cowboys, there.

Since then, the Royals have won four of their last five playoff games,. The Royals won the AFC Championship Game in 2013 and the AFC Divisional Game in 2014, and the NFC Championship Game  in 2015. The Royals are the first team, after the Green Bay Packers, to appear in more than one Super Bowl and the first to appear in the championship game in two different decades.
