He was named German Footballer of the Year at the end of the 2014-15 season. He is also the highest scoring teenager in the Bundesliga during the 2013-14 season, scoring 13 goals in 13 games. He has been called up to the German national team for the 2014 World Cup. He also played for Germany at the 2014 European Championships in Brazil. He played his first game in the Champions League against Atlético Madrid in March 2018.

He scored a brace against Hertha BSC on the final day of the season in the final game of the campaign. In January 2019, he scored on his 100th appearance for the club to help them to a 1–0 league win over Stuttgart. In May, he also scored his 15th goal of the league season during a 6–1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt; he saw him score seven goals in the first half of a match for the first time ever in the German top flight. He plays as an attacking midfielder or winger for Chelsea and the Germany national team.
