Joseph Desha

Joseph Desha was a U.S. Representative and the ninth governor of Kentucky. He was of part French Huguenot ancestry, and his ancestors fled from France to Pennsylvania after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. His family settled near present-day Gallatin, Tennessee, where they were involved in many skirmishes with the Indians. In 1807, he was elected to the first of six consecutive terms in the U. S. House of Representatives.

Summary Joseph DeshaJoseph Desha was a U.S. Representative and the ninth governor of Kentucky. He was of part French Huguenot ancestry, and his ancestors had fled from France to Pennsylvania after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. Desha’s family settled near present-day Gallatin, Tennessee, where they were involved in many skirmishes with the Indians. In 1807, he was elected to the first of six consecutive terms in the U. S. House of Representatives. He volunteered to serve in the War of 1812, and commanded a division at the Battle of the Thames. After the Panic of 1819, he made a second campaign for the governorship on promises of relief for the state’s large debtor class. His reputation was damaged by two controversies during his term, including his role in the ouster of Horace Holley as president of Transylvania University. He retired from public life and ultimately died at his son’s home in Georgetown, Kentucky, on October 11, 1842. He married Margaret Bsoe in December 1789; the couple had 13 children over the course of their marriage between 1789 and 1792. He died in 1842; his son Isaac B. Desha would later represent Tennessee in the United States House of Reps. in the 1850s and 1860s. He is buried in Fayette County, Kentucky; his wife died in the town of Crab Orchard in the same county in 1881.

He had a son, Robert Desha, who would later serve as a member of the House of Rep. from Kentucky in the 1880s and 1890s. His grandson, Robert, would also become a member and later congressman from Tennessee. He also served in the Kentucky House ofReps. from 1891 to 1894. He served in Congress from 1894 until his death in 1841. He wrote a book about his experiences, “Desha: A Biography of a War Hawk,” which was published in 1891. The book was co-authored by his son, Isaac Desha. It was published by Simon & Schuster, Inc., and is available in hard copies for about $1,000.
