Rahm was the number one golfer in the World Amateur Golf Ranking for a record 60 weeks. He was the low amateur at the 2016 U.S. Open. In January 2017, Rahm won the Farmers Insurance Open with a 60-foot eagle putt on the final hole to notch his maiden PGA Tour title. The following week, he earned his first European Tour victory by winning the Irish Duty Duty Free Dubai Open. He is currently ranked 14th in the Official World Golf Ranking, having first achieved that rank after winning the Memorial Tournament in July 2020. He turned professional in January 2016, and won the RBC Canadian Open, securing Special Temporary Member status for the remainder of the season. In March, he played in his first World Golf Championships event at the WGC-Mexico Championship where he shot rounds of 67-70-67-68 to finish T3, two strokes behind winner Dustin Johnson.

In his second WGC event, the W GC-Dell Technologies Match Play, he was runner-up to Dustin Johnson in the championship match. He finished tied for 10th in his debut in a European Tour event, which allowed him to ascend to a new career-high world ranking of 14th. In May, he won the Dean & DeLuca Invitational Invitational, which lifted him into the top-10 of the World-10 rankings. In July, he became the first Spaniard to be ranked No. 1 in the world since Seve Ballesteros in 2007. He has won the Masters Tournament, The Players Championship, the PGA Championship, and the Open Championship. He also won the 2014 Eisenhower Trophy, the leading individual at the 2014 American Amateur Championship. In April 2015, he become the 28th player to be the No. 1-ranked golfer on the Worldateur Golf Ranking. He advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2015 U. S. Amateur before losing to Derek Bard.
