John Ratcliffe (governor)

John Ratcliffe was captain of Discovery, one of three ships that sailed from the Kingdom of England to Virginia. He later became the second president of the colony which later became Jamestown. He was killed by the Pamunkey Native Americans in 1609. In Disney’s Pocahontas, Ratcliffe is portrayed as a greedy and ruthlessly ambitious man.

He later became the second president of the colony which later became Jamestown. Ratcliffe fell out of favour with many colonists after enlisting men to build a governor’s house. He was killed by the Pamunkey Native Americans in 1609. In Disney’s Pocahontas, Ratcliffe is portrayed as a greedy and ruthlessly ambitious man, and the film’s main antagonist. His character believes that the Powhatan tribe is very barbaric in nature and have hidden gold near the outskirts of Virginia.

He wants to battle the Native Americans for them, despite the fact that there was never any gold in Virginia and that the tribe has their own type of society. He is finally exposed for his incompetence and treachery and is imprisoned by King James I. In this adaptation, he is accompanied by the pug servant Wiggins. He also appeared in the direct-video sequel Pocahonte II: Journey to a New World.
