Verrett played college football at TCU and was a first-team All-Big 12 selection. He underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum in his shoulder in March 2014. In November 2014, he was placed on injured reserve for the rest of his rookie season. He is the highest selected TCU defender since Bob Lilly in 1961. The 49ers signed Verrett to a four-year, USD 7. 88 million contract that includes USD 6. 39 million guaranteed and a signing bonus of USD 4. 05 million on May 29, 2014. He has also played for the New England Patriots, Seattle Seahawks, and Green Bay Packers in the NFL. He also played track and field for Angelo Rodriguez High School in San Diego, where he took 3rd in the Freshmansophomore finals in the 100-meter dash in 2007.

He played running back on offense and cornerback on the defensive side at Santa Rosa Junior College. In football, he received Back of the Year honors on offense his junior and senior years. While at SRJC, Verrett was named to the all-conference first team in 2010. The following year, he had 63 tackles and a team-leading six interceptions. He attended the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis and completed all of the combine and positional drills. He finished second, among all participating defensive backs, in the 40-yard dash, and only performed the bench press and vertical jump at TCU’s pro day. At the conclusion of the pre-draft process, Verrette was projected to be a mid to late first round pick by NFL draft experts and scouts. He had pre- draft visits with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Houston Texans, Arizona Cardinals, New York Jets, and St. Louis Rams.
