Ipswich Town Football Club is a professional association football club based in Ipswich, Suffolk, England. They play in League One, the third tier of the English football league system. The club was founded in 1878 but did not turn professional until 1936. Ipswich have won the English league title once, in their first season in the top flight in 1961–62, and have twice finished runners-up. They won the FA Cup in 1977–78, and the UEFA Cup in 1980–81. They have never lost at home in European competition, defeating Real Madrid, A. C. Milan, Inter Milan, Lazio and Barcelona.

Ipswich have won the English league title once, in their first season in the top flight in 1961–62, and have twice finished runners-up. They won the FA Cup in 1977–78, and the UEFA Cup in 1980–81. They have never lost at home in European competition, defeating Real Madrid, A. C. Milan, Inter Milan, Lazio and Barcelona, among others. The only fully professional football club in Suffolk, they have a long-standing and fierce rivalry with Norwich City in Norfolk, with whom they have contested the East Anglian derby 148 times since 1902. They were elected to the Football League on 30 May 1938, and played in Division Three until the end of the 1953–54 season, when they won the title and promotion to Division One. In 1960–61 they won promotion to the top level of English football, Division One, in 1960–62. As English league champions, they qualified for the 1962–63 European Cup, defeating Maltese side Floriana 14–1 on aggregate before losing to A.C. Milan. In the 1974 FA Cup semi-finals for the first time, they reached the semi-final of the league, losing to West Ham United after a replay.

By the late 1970s, Ipswich had built a strong side with talent in every department, introducing the Dutch pair Arnold Mühssen and Frans Thijssen to add flair to a team that featured British internationals including John Wark, Terry Butcher and Paul Mariner. In 1979, they beat Manchester United 6–0 in a league game, a game they had not won in six years. The team won the Suffolk Challenge Cup and the Suffolk Senior Cup. In 1998, they won a number of local cup competitions, including the Norfolk & Suffolk League from 1899 and the South East AngLian League between 1903 and 1906, and won the Southern Amateur League in 1907. In 2001, they became founder members of the Eastern Counties Football League, before joining the Southern League in 1934. In 2008, they were elected to the English Football League in 1938. In 2010, the club won the League Cup and reached the final of the FA League Cup, losing 2-1 to West Bromwich Albion. In 2012, they finished third in the league and the league Cup, reaching the FA Premier League play-offs for the second time in their history. In 2013, they also reached the quarter-finals of the European Champions League, losing 1-0 to Galatasaray in the last 16 of the competition. In 2014, they played in the Capital One Cup final, losing 3-2 to Manchester City. In 2015, they lost 2-0 at home to Newcastle United.
