Great Union Day

Great Union Day is a national holiday in Romania, celebrated on 1 December. It commemorates the unification of Transylvania, Bessarabia, and Bukovina with the Romanian Kingdom in 1918. Every year, an annual military parade known officially as the National Military Parade of the Romanian Armed Forces is held in central Bucharest.

It commemorates the unification of Transylvania, Bessarabia, and Bukovina with the Romanian Kingdom in 1918. Prior to 1948, until the abolition of the monarchy, the national holiday was on 10 May, which had a double meaning: it was the day on which King Carol I set foot on Romanian soil. From 1948 to 1990, the holiday was celebrated on 23 August, Liberation from Fascist Occupation Day. It was adopted in 1990 by a parliament dominated by members of the National Salvation Front and promulgated by the president Ion Iliescu. Every year, an annual military parade known officially as the National Military Parade of the Romanian Armed Forces is held in central Bucharest.

A parade is also held in the cities of Alba Iulia and within other major cities of Romania. The president of Romania is the guest of honor at the parade in his role as constitutional Commander in Chief. The parade is provided by the color guard provided by Michael Brave Guards before inspecting and inspecting the honor guard. After the parade, the president walks to the square to receive the lone trumpeter played by a trumpeter. Mass is then performed by the Romanian General Staff.
