In the 1980s he became better known for his combat knives and popularizing a style of knife known as the Tactical- folder. Emerson founded Emerson Knives, Inc a production company to mass-produce his designs in 1996. Emerson’s knives have been displayed as museum pieces, designed for use by Navy SEALs and used by NASA in outer space. He is an accomplished martial artist who has developed a combatives system, Emerson Combat Systems, which has been taught to police officers, military units, and civilians. Emerson credits his grandfather’s gift of a Barlow knife to him at the age of eight years with starting his interest in knives, but it was not until later in life that he turned to making them. He also trained in Gracie Jiu Jitsu for three years at the original Gracie Academy in Torrance, California, under the founders of the Gracie Gracie system, Rorion and Royce Gracie. Emerson used rare materials from the aerospace industry, including titanium, carbon fiber, meteorite, and mother-of-pearl shella staua. He refused to use any animal parts or plant parts which was an endangered species, noting that he was an environmentally conscious knifemaker as being an environmentally-conscious knifer. The blades he used in these blades were typically ATS-34, 440, 440 AE-L, or 440-B, 440-L AE-B or 440, AE-C-L 440-C, 440 or 440 AE, AE, C-L or 440 ATS, AE or 440 L 440.

Emerson refuses to use the parts of any animal plant or plant which is an endangered animal, noting the parts he used were rare and rare hardwoods, staghorn, abalone shella paua, stag shella, palone shell, pangolin shell, sturgeon shell, and other rare and endangered species. He has also used the Walker Linerlock mechanism on his own knives. Emerson made his knives on a part-time basis, but upon seeing a Michael Walker handmade folding knife at a gun show, he was so impressed by the quality and design that he decided he was going to make folding pocketknives from that point on. Emerson went on to make fixed-blade knives for a martial arts class and made knives for his wife, Mary, who at the time was one of the world’s top female practitioners of Jujutsu. His knives are featured in films and novels, due to their association with military units. This has furthered their popularity with collectors. Emerson has been featured in numerous books, including “The Art of Knife Making” and “Knife Wars” Emerson has also appeared in numerous television shows, including the film version of “The Karate Kid” and the film “The Secret of the Dragon”. He has been married to Mary Emerson since 1998.
