About Eluru outbreak in brief

Summary Eluru outbreakThe first case was reported on Saturday, 5 December 2020, with over five hundreds more falling ill over the next week and one person dying. The cause is unknown, but heavy metal contamination has been indicated as the most likely reason. The disease was originally found in the One Town area before spreading to other parts of the city as well as the Eluru area and Denduluru village. Although the disease affects all age groups, over 300 of the infected are children. Reported symptoms include headache, vomiting, dizziness, convulsions, nausea, anxiety, loss of consciousness and other neurological symptoms, which have been described as being similar to epilepsy.

Viruses such as SARS-CoV-2, Japanese encephalitis, dengue, chikungunya, hepatitis and rabies have been ruled out as the cause, as have been water contamination and air pollution. It has been speculated that pesticides may have leeched into the water supply after flash floods in the area. The state health minister has faced criticism from the opposition for his perceived failure to prevent the outbreak.
