In films, Murphy has received Golden Globe Award nominations for his performances in 48 Hrs., the Beverly Hills Cop series, Trading Places, The Nutty Professor, and Dolemite Is My Name.

His mother and stepfather Vernon Lynch, a foreman at an ice cream plant, later raised him and his brother in Roosevelt. Murphy was awarded the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor by the John F. F.
